Alpana Rai

Artist bio

Influenced by the motion and emotional content of the external environment, Melbourne artist Alpana Rai’s energetic abstracts explore the lay of the Australian land. Symbolically highlighting its infinite forms, shapes, tones and breadth, her work depicts the collison between her memorised and imagined scapes, resulting in deeply layered, thought provoking, profoundly conceptualised scenes. With a process rooted in instinct and intuition, Alpana’s images typically begin from a desire to interpret a specific situation or locality. While layering and mark making techniques are utilised to achieve dimension and form, expressive brushstroke work and highly impactful colours are incorporated to invoke a rushing, rhythmic movement and flow. Pieces are worked and reworked in an effort to capture the experience until, eventually, the paint offers up its own conclusions, which Alpana routinely develops into the work’s ultimate expression. Alpana, who finds herself more introvertedly inclined,

I create art because...

My art gives me satisfaction , The feelings which I can't convey with words I can tell through my paintings and colours. Creating art is a way of expressing myself and my thoughts .My abstracts are moody and expressive, they are more concerned with colour, line, form, and texture than subject matter.

I am different to most artists because...

My art have some part of me in my every painting .My Paintings are not based on reality; instead they are reflections of the moods and emotions I’m feeling at the time. I don’t pre-plan my abstract works; instead, I allow them to happen organically.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

I look for original and unusual ways to translate the images in my head onto the canvas, giving them an ‘element of surprise’ that draws people in. I would love for people to feel the emotions which I was Feeling at the time of Painting when they see my work.

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

For me abstract art is an interpretation of life in different colours. I hope you find your own emotions in my paintings.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

art makes community more beautiful it helps us heal, grow and improve ourselves.
