Peta Tranquille (MAPS)

Artist bio

With over 30 years of Cartographic experience, Peta’s passion lies in maps and aerial views of the Earth. This perspective is the one she finds the most inspiring. First, Peta selects locations by studying aerial photographs and searching for exciting but simple shapes. Next, Peta closely inspects the shapes and determines where to enhances the forms in the landscape. She then makes the decision on whether to use shadows or texture, adding an element of three-dimensionality. Furthermore, by researching the area, and visiting the site, Peta takes notes of patterns and colours. By compiling all this information she can then design and paint her interpretation of a contemporary map.

I create art because...

The desire to create is who I am.

I am different to most artists because...

I am unable to visualise. I have a condition called Aphantasia which means I have to approach my work differently.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

My art is based on geographic locations and if someone has a connection to that place then I would want you to feel great when you recall those memories.

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

When you look at art, you must spend time really looking to appreciate it. The worth of one artwork is not just the materials, and the time it took to create. It also includes years of experimentation, research and practice.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

Life is so busy now and sometimes we need to take the time to chill and appreciate something that is not on a digital screen but instead creating by human hands.
