Artist bio

My art explores belonging, community and creativity. It tells a story we already know and share. The education sector ingrained in me a childlike view of the world, giving my art a broad range and sometimes unresolved edge.
I’m drawn to the colour and movement of water, the form of flowers, negative spaces where light seeps in and texture.
Art is a source of joy for me, it’s how I sing, dance and pray. I create to express emotion, share memories, for contemplation and ultimately as meditation.
My interest in nature continually evolves and I find myself questioning the use of non-renewables in my practice. My process has always involved recycling and experimenting and these two aspects come together as I explore avenues for including waste materials from my home and studio in the art. As I move in this direction, I find inspiration through the creatures and environments that look to us for hope while also being impressed by man made structures that celebrate nature.

I create art because...

Its the way I can best express how I feel, it calms me. I say art is how I sing, dance and pray.

I am different to most artists because...

I'm always trying to create less not more. Less imagery, less marks, less output, less perfection. But that's an unobtainable dream and my work is complex and multi layered and I work feverishly for long periods, creating large volumes. I start simple and finish with layers on layers because my thoughts come tumbling out on top of each other.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

Familiarity. Id love for you to want to look at it over and over to search through the detail, discover all the hidden story telling, identify with the imperfections and recognize something in it. I believe a sense of belonging is essential to wellbeing and I want you to be able to look at my art feel you belong.

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

Everyone is an artist. The world is a creative space and our very existence in the world is part of that creation. Art isn't the ability to render a perfect replica of what you see but rather the ability to see the imperfect and connect with it.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

It takes us somewhere else, gives us a chance to see the world with a different lens. Some artists use that lens to spotlight the harshness and injustice of the world. I try to use it to provide a comforting arm or a shoulder to cry on.
