“I see the world and I paint it” Kathy Best

Kathy creates bold, expressive acrylic abstracts and contemporary paintings based on observation of the world around her. The works are predominately based on the present landscape and landscapes observed while travelling. She sometimes paints loosely from reference photos or memory. Other times she lets the paint and marks on the canvas guide her. Kathy’s works explore colour relationships, movement, shapes and layers.

Kathy has been painting consistently since 2008 under the guidance of many tutors. She is continuously learning and thinking of new ideas. In 2019 Kathy completed a Certificate III in Visual Arts, in 2021 she completed a Certificate IV in Visual Arts and in 2023 she completed her Diploma in Visual Arts at RMIT.

“Take a look, take a 2nd look and take a longer look – I love putting my work out there.” Kathy Best

I create art because...

that is what I need to do. The more I think about art and painting the more I want to create art and paint. I love seeing what unfolds on the canvas and enjoy the constant problem solving.

I am different to most artists because...

I let the canvas and what's on the canvas guide me with my next mark.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

interested in what you see, and I want you to take a second and longer look at the work. Think about the memories and thoughts that the piece evokes in you.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

it gets us thinking, it brings back memories, it takes us to other places and provides a refuge from our busy lives. It makes the world a better place.
