Lisa Kotoulas

Artist bio

Hello, my name is Lisa Kotoulas and I am a visual artist living and working in Sydney Australia. My studio is located in the Brand X Incubator spaces in St Leonards.

I have a Masters in Painting from UNSW Art and Design (or COFA) and have exhibited within Australia and internationally.

Most of my art practice centres around oil painting on canvas but I also like to extend the work into small scale three dimensional installations. I'm often pushing myself to create work in a new way which keeps things fresh and interesting, both for myself and my audience.

Although my work centres mostly around the human form and facial expressions, I don't really call myself a portrait artist. I am interested in what it means to be human and to be living but I am also fascinated with what may lie beyond. I enjoy challenging conventional ideas and always try to ask more questions than provide any answers through my work.

I would love to hear from you if you are keen to chat.

I create art because...

this is my work and I love my job.

I am different to most artists because...

we are all unique and individual, nothing more of less.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

, well just to feel. I am hoping you have a response to the work in no particular way. If you feel anything at all, then that to me is success.

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

we are all creative. We are all born creative and that can translate in many ways throughout someones life. You might play with numbers, or with words, rearrange cupboards or create time schedules for chores, you might pack lunches or create meals, you might need to solve the problem of how to pay the next bill. Creative is a state of mind. Artist is a title.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

it allows us to let go. The freedom of art can be liberating and empowering, both in response to it and as a creator of it.
