Artist bio

My initial art training was in the areas of life drawing, ceramics and sculpture. I have loved creating art all my life, exploring en plein air painting, spray paints and stenciling, water colours, acrylics and botanical art. In 2013 I started my own business to support my creative endeavours, which comprise painting, poetry, songwriting and recording projects. In all of these areas, storytelling, the intertwining of language and identity and the energy of imagination and play are fundamental. In my work I prize domestic and environmental harmony and objects connected to people now gone and therefore their memory. I value clutter and kitsch and the beauty in the everyday; humour, individuality, eccentricity, acceptance and inclusion around tables; the stories that come with the sharing of food and drink in cups and plates that someone’s parents and grandparents might have used. For me, it's all about place and people, people and place.

I create art because...

When drawing and painting I feel I see more deeply into things. It's also fun.

I am different to most artists because...

I don't know if I am different from most artists. We all feel compelled to create, or we wouldn't do it, I guess.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

Happiness or joy, but also a twinge of something else ... a memory?

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

Thank you for your attention.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

Art can both satisfy and provoke the artist and the viewer. It connects us with each other and our environment but also isolates us so we have to listen and look with a bit more focus. It helps us understand something a little better - whether that's suddenly noticing the way light falls and how shapes appear or understanding something more about ourselves.
