Michelle Jk (Michelle J Kowalczyk)

Artist bio

Michelle Jk is an artist, writer and teacher with a diverse arts practice, mixing the traditional & the contemporary. Her practice includes painting, drawing, digital design, photography, mixed media & sculpture. Through various media, Michelle explores the environment & natural world around her through oceanic & botanical art. These are predominantly traditional drawing and oil paintings, however some also feature mixed media aspects such as glow in the dark pigments or other media. Michelle's sculptures are heavy in the use of mixed media, incorporating recycled & refurbished parts, woodwork, 3D design, 3D printing, lead lighting & resin casting.

Michelle's practice also includes abstract artworks that explore the more personal & emotional parts of the artist's life. Abstract works feature strong emotional symbolism through colour & are painted with great depth not just in meaning, but also through layers & details done with meticulous care & repetition, requiring time & patience.

I create art because...

It colours my world with creativity and inspiration, something I want to share and that I hope colours the world of others as well.

I am different to most artists because...

Every work of art that I create has a story. A short story is written specifically for and with the artwork that it accompanies, adding an unexpected aspect and side to each artwork.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

Lost. I want desperately to make you lose yourself within my artwork, to sink into the details and layers, to experience even for just a moment nothing but the art. The aim is to one day create only masterpieces that all those who stand before them, feel the world fade away, leaving only the art. To paint well enough that people lose themselves within a work of art is a compliment of the highest order.

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

your interpretation & feelings that an artwork evokes are invaluable & important beyond everything else, including the artists intention. What an artwork invokes in you should determine the worth you give it. Of course, being informed & the opinions or the artist, critics & experts can build on an artworks experience and value so always learn more about the art you admire. However, at the end of the day you get to love or hate the art you want, building on your own artistic taste & appreciation

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

It's the magic in the world that fuels inspiration and creativity. It fuels emotions, good and bad, making the human experience one of greater depth and understanding through different windows in a canvas. It also brings colour to the world in a way that nothing else can, not only does it colour our walls but also our lives and our perceptions, capturing things even a camera cannot always capture.
