Myra Carter

Artist bio

Myra is a contemporary abstract artist with a passion for colour and texture. She enjoys experimenting with different techniques, materials, and colours. She feels excited by the unpredictability of abstraction and chooses to work by letting the artwork talk to her as she develops the parts of a painting she likes. A juxtaposition of colours, an interesting texture, some wide expressive strokes can begin the creative process.

Diversity is the cornerstone of her work. Myra’s creativity is sparked by the natural world and those influences can often be seen in her work. As a child, Myra came from Scotland to live in Melbourne with her family. Her previous career was as a psychologist. She feels this has enhanced her artistic career as she seeks to express emotion through her work on canvas. Myra sees painting as a way to celebrate life using bold colours or to create a soothing experience with softer hues. Her works continue to be exhibited in a variety of Art Shows and elsewhere.

I create art because...

It gives me immense pleasure to be immersed in playing with colour, form and texture and to create something of beauty as a result.

I am different to most artists because...

We are all different and have our distinct styles just as each persons hand writing is different even although we have learned the same techniques.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

I want my art to be colourful and to evoke a feeling of joy and celebration at being alive. I also seek to capture a quiet and contemplative emotion through softer colours. Art brings energy to the space it occupies. I want that energy to be uplifting.

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

Open your heart to the visual language of art. Ask yourself what you are feeling when you look at a piece of art. Look beyond the brush strokes to the emotion. Art is a way for us to speak to each other without using words.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

Art affects our well being and the healing and soothing powers of art are only just being understood through our increased ability to study the brain. Art has the power to affect many of our emotions as does colour. This has a huge number of beneficial flow on effects. Art can bring energy, atmosphere and vitality to a space like a light has been turned on.
