Narelle Callen
Artist bio
Hi, My name is Narelle Callen. I am a visual artist and designer based on the Mornington Peninsula where I live with my husband, two children and our border collie. I run a creative practice which includes painting, making, teaching art and designing textile prints and patterns for licencing as surface designs. For over 17 years I worked in the corporate world as a project manager on large engineering projects and prior to that as a designer and artist for interior designers. However, as my kids started school, traveling 4 hours a day to and from work was not feasible and I returned to a creative career that I could manage from home. I hold a Bachelors and Graduate Diploma in Industrial Design and a Masters in Project Management. The Mornington Peninsula’s hills, vineyards, bays and beaches offer me endless inspiration for art and design. Please visit my website at https://www.callencollective.com.au and Instagram @callencollective_art to see more or my work.
I create art because...
I am a very creative person at heart. I love to paint, draw and design what I see around me and I draw inspiration from my surrounding hills, vineyards, beaches and the bay. I sailed for many years and often my artwork has a nautical theme. My head is full of projects and ideas that I explore through either painting or design.
I am different to most artists because...
My painting style is different to many artists and my artwork is usually described as very colourful with beautifully blended colours and brushwork. My preferred genre is abstract landscape and I also paint figures of character and determination. I do not copy and steer clear of "trends".
When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...
Happiness
The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...
My paintings will intrigue you and draw you to look more deeply. They will remind you of something or somewhere you know from your past, or can imagine yourself being happy in.
I believe art is an important part of our lives because...
Art stretches our minds and opens our heart. It helps us imagine a better or more interesting life than what we know. Of course it is decorative, but those paintings that draw you in, capture your imagination and keep you coming back are the paintings and art that really resonate with your soul.
