Peta Tranquille

Artist bio

Currently mapping Melbourne in her own abstract style, but maintaining map rules, like orientation and scale Peta Tranquille is an artist that is not easily definable. Mostly self taught, Peta has been drawing and painting her whole life. With over 30 years of Cartographic experience her focus is on maps. Born in Perth but raised on a farm in the WA wheatbelt from a young age, exposing her to rural and city ways of life. Her studies lead to a career in map-making before the digital age and reliance on computers, therefore her work is distinctly precise. It is also infused with colour, with her skilful techniques creating pieces that capture the viewer. Peta was born an artist and it shows as her work reflect her experience and passion. She creates with vivid detail, showcasing her appreciation for maps. Peta’s portfolio and insights into her artistic process can be found on Facebook, Instagram and more. Peta signed her work P.Louise.G since she was a teenager. #plouiseg

I create art because...

The desire to create is who I am

I am different to most artists because...

I am unable to visualise. I have what is called Aphantasia and it means I have to approach my work differently

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

My art doesn't require the viewer to have feeling or emotion. My art is strongly based on geographic locations and is therefore more factual in the form of shapes and colours. I want the viewer to have a better appreciation for maps.

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

When you look at art you must spend time really looking in order to appreciate it. And artists put a lot of time and effort into their works so don't expect us to give it away for free.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

Life is so busy now and sometimes we need to take the time to chill and appreciate something that is not on a digital screen but instead creating by human hands.
